UPI frauds are a growing concern in India, where cybercriminals exploit the popularity of digital payment systems. These scams target individuals and businesses, attempting to steal funds or sensitive information. Here's what you should be aware of:
Modus Operandi:
Fake Apps: Scammers create fake UPI apps that mimic legitimate ones, tricking users into downloading and using them for transactions.
Impersonation:Fraudsters may impersonate trusted entities, such as banks or government agencies, through phone calls, emails, or text messages.
Phishing Links:Victims receive phishing links that lead to fake UPI websites asking for login credentials and personal information.
SIM Swapping:Cybercriminals can fraudulently obtain a victim's SIM card to intercept OTPs (One-Time Passwords) and gain unauthorized access to their UPI account.
Unauthorized Transactions:Scammers initiate unauthorized UPI transactions from the victim's account, transferring funds to their own accounts.
QR Code scams:Fraudsters either send a QR code or a request to accept payment on the pretext of purchase of item listed by the victim. It may be a second-hand item listed for sale or house for rent, fraudsters may even be willing to pay without checking the item. Fraudsters in many cases send a small amount to victims to gain their trust.
Secure Your Mobile: Set up a strong password or PIN to lock your mobile device, and use biometric authentication if available.
Use Official Apps: Download your bank's official mobile app from trusted app stores. Avoid third-party apps, especially those from unofficial sources.
UPI Pin safety: Avoid sharing OTPs or UPI PINs with anyone.
Be Skeptical: Be cautious of unsolicited emails, messages, or calls asking for UPI information or OTPs. Legitimate banks or UPI providers will never ask for this information.
Verify Payment Details: Always double-check the payment details, including beneficiary names and account numbers, before confirming transactions.
Regularly Monitor Transactions: Review your transaction history regularly and report any unauthorized or suspicious transactions to your bank immediately.
Safe Wi-Fi: Avoid using public Wi-Fi for UPI transactions. Use a secure, private network.
SIM Protection: Contact your mobile service provider to set up additional security measures for your SIM card.
Enter PIN only for Debit:Remember that UPI PIN is only entered when you do a payment. For receiving payment, a user need not do scan or QR Code or enter PIN.
Educate Yourself: Stay informed about common UPI frauds and scams. Share this knowledge with friends and family.
Report Fraud: If you become a victim of UPI fraud, report it to your bank and local law enforcement authorities immediately.
By following these safety tips and staying vigilant, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to UPI frauds and protect your digital financial transactions in India.
